Layaan is a multiscript typeface for magazines and cultural publications. It supports Latin, Arabic, and Greek. It was created during the MA in Typeface Design at the University of Reading.
The type family consists of a variety of styles that respond to the needs of complex editorial design. Layaan Latin includes regular, italic, semibold and bold. Additionally, the bold sans serif and the display styles can be used for pull quotes and titling.
Layaan Arabic includes a regular and bold naskh, plus a ruq’ah secondary style. The ruq’ah is a modern interpretation of the traditional style, and it can be used in display sizes and for emphasis in text. The ruq’ah incorporates connections for a horizontal baseline, improving compatibility in parallel typesetting of the two styles. It also features a variety of alternates and ruq’ah-specific letterforms that give it a unique voice.
